Resources for Writers, 1/e

BASIC APPROACH
(Note: This textbook was published by our college division for use by students at post-secondary institutions whose writing skills are below the level needed to succeed in college English. Please review this text carefully to ensure appropriateness of content for your students.)
Resources for Writers is the first in a new textbook series to fully meet the needs of the developing writer AND the basic writing educator.
The integration of comprehensive skill instruction, a wealth of exercises, and a lab manual make Resources for Writers the most complete resource for basic writing at the paragraph to essay level.
Resources for Writers uses writing process and a modes approach to teach paragraph development. This combination ensures a thorough and highly effective learning experience. The completely modular chapters feature sample writings on cultural literacy themes, exercises, and step-by-step writing prompts. The grammar section also contains exercises designed to assist students in mastering skills. The text's Lab Manual consists of workbook activities for each text chapter that are supplemented by additional, correlated activities in the Online Lab Manual.
FEATURES
- Clear, highly accessible instruction. The text's contemporary, upbeat language will appeal to today's students. The tone is never condescending or stuffy.
- Cultural literacy theme. Each chapter is introduced by a short Culture Note on topics ranging from the lighthearted (doughnuts as an American snack) to the serious (the causes of the Civil War), and across the academic spectrum (Greek mythology, prominent scientists, Freud, Shakespeare). The theme is carried throughout the chapter in illustrations, sample paragraphs, and exercises.
- Engaging sample paragraphs. Sample paragraphs focus on cultural literacy themes, engaging students with interesting information and modeling academic writing.
- High visual interest. More than 75 color photos and 30 diagrams elucidate cultural themes and pedagogical concepts and invite students to respond in writing.
- Four Cs approach to skills. The mnemonic device—concise, credible, clear, correct—is used consistently to reinforce corresponding skills and lead the student through the writing process steps.
- Peer evaluation and self-analysis emphasis. Students are encouraged to monitor their own progress through goal sheets and to work cooperatively with their peers using a peer editing worksheet.
- Lab Manual and Lab Manual Online. Each chapter is supplemented by a two-page, consumable activity in the text Lab Manual. An additional activity that corresponds to and enhances the text activity appears on the Lab Manual Online.
