BASIC APPROACH

(Note: This textbook was published by our college division for use by students at post-secondary institutions whose reading skills are below the level needed to succeed in college. Please review this text carefully to ensure appropriateness of content for your students.)

Reading Across the Disciplines offers an unequalled scope of academic disciplines, concise skill instruction, and extensive practice to improve college-level reading and thinking skills.

Reading Across the Disciplines is organized into three parts for flexibility and ease-of-use. Part One presents a brief skill introduction (in handbook format) introducing students to essential vocabulary, comprehension, critical reading, and reading rate skills. Part Two has thirteen chapters—each contain four readings representative of a different academic discipline. The text then culminates with Part Three for two complete textbook chapters that enable students to practice skills on longer pieces of writing.

FEATURES

  • Thirteen academic disciplines are represented through high-interest topics so students understand the relevance of academic disciples.
  • Discipline-specific reading skills—Each discipline-specific chapter in Part Two begins with tips for reading and learning within the particular discipline.
  • Active read skills development—Students are taught to approach reading as a process requiring involvement and response.
  • Progressive Readings—Chapter readings are organized conceptually from less to more difficult.
  • Reading skills in context—Questions following each reading are cross-referenced to the skill instruction of Part One so students can use reading skills in context.
  • Four-color and visually appealing design—College students are increasingly becoming visual learners and the third edition promotes the visual literacy critical to success in today's world.
  • Two complete textbook chapters—The inclusion of full-length textbook chapters makes Reading Across the Disciplines a complete, all-in-one resource for reading instructors and students.
  • Extensive vocabulary practice—Each reading offers vocabulary-in-context exercises.
