BASIC APPROACH

(Note: This textbook was published by our college division for use by students at post-secondary institutions whose writing skills are below the level needed to succeed in college English. Please review this text carefully to ensure appropriateness of content for your students.)

Making Meaning is a developmental reading text that balances teaching phonics and whole language skills for students who read below the 6th grade level.

Designed with the daily text and visual literacy needs of adult learners in mind, the text provides the tools needed to acquire the reading, writing, thinking, and reasoning skills that will enable students to effectively process, analyze, and learn information on their own. A wide variety of readings are included, ranging from basic to challenging, which acknowledge students' experiences and prepare them for the type of reading required in college. The text is designed to be visually appealing through the use of numerous photographs and other graphics that illustrate points made in the text, stimulate critical thinking, and teach students to read visual materials. Making Meaning is recursive, giving the opportunity in each chapter for students to practice and integrate skills learned from previous lessons and apply those reading strategies to many kinds of texts.
