BASIC APPROACH

(Note: This textbook was published by our college division for use by students at post-secondary institutions whose reading skills are below the level needed to succeed in college. Please review this text carefully to ensure appropriateness of content for your students.)

Reading Between the Lines is the higher-level book of a new, two-book reading series with a focus on inference and critical reading, intended for developing readers.

The text foregrounds inference by discussing the skills and strategies required for "reading between the lines," that is, critical thinking, critical reading, and reading comprehension. Learning and study strategies are also discussed. Reading Between the Lines teaches students how to identify the "other story" behind both academic and professional texts, to dig beyond the literal, to think critically, to understand the varied levels of meaning in a line, and to create informed opinions about modern issues affecting our daily lives.

FEATURES

  • Clear, structured skill instruction—example/explanation/practice organization—introduces, illustrates, and demonstrates each new skill.
  • Cross-disciplinary college textbook readings from disciplines including sociology, psychology, economics, history, political science, communications, biology, chemistry, and so forth, are high-interest, current, and engaging. • Practice exercises accompany each reading and also increase in level of difficulty. Exercises cover vocabulary, critical thinking, and basic comprehension. Includes multiple choice, short answer, true/false, critical thinking, and free writing.
  • "Reading Between the Lines" boxes (two to three per chapter gradually introduces students to the concept and application of inference.
  • "Visual Literacy" boxes (two to three per chapter) provide students with explanation and practice at interpreting visuals within context.
