This chapter discusses how chemical bonds result from the sharing or transfer of valence electrons between pairs of atoms. The formation of an ionic bond between an anion and a cation is described. Properties of ionic compounds, such as high melting points, are attributed to the properties of their ionic bonds. The properties of metallic bonds are described and compared to properties of ionic bonds. Chapter Outline

In this chapter, you will learn:
  • to use the periodic table to infer the number of valence electrons
  • to characterize an ionic bond
  • to explain the electrical conductivity of ionic compounds
  • to use the theory of metallic bonds to explain physical properties of metals
  • to describe the arrangements of atoms in common metallic crystal structures
