This chapter describes how redox reactions make possible energy interconversion between electrical energy and chemical energy. Voltaic and electrolytic cells are compared. The concept of oxidation and reduction half-cells is introduced as a means of calculating standard cell potentials and determining whether or not a redox reaction is spontaneous. Chapter Outline

In this chapter, you will learn:
  • to describe redox reactions
  • to explain the structure of a dry cell
  • to define standard cell potential and standard reduction potential
  • to distinguish between electrolytic and voltaic cells
  • to identify the products of electrolysis
