In this chapter, you will be introduced to electromagnetic radiation and quantum theory. You will learn that radiation has both the properties of waves and the properties of particles and that energy is emitted and absorbed in discrete amounts or quanta. The quantum-mechanical model of the atom is introduced to describe the sequential energy levels in which electrons can be found. Electron configurations of atoms and ions are determined by the distribution of the atom's electrons within the principal energy levels. Chapter Outline

In this chapter, you will learn:
  • to describe a wave
  • to identify the major regions of the electromagnetic spectrum
  • to explain what is meant by a quantum of energy
  • to relate the energy of radiation to its frequency
  • to state the main idea in Bohr's model of the atom
  • to describe atomic orbitals in terms of their shape, size, and energy
  • to determine the electron configurations of several elements
