In this chapter, students will be introduced to bond angles, which shape small molecules. They will learn about the valence shell electron pair repulsion theory (VSEPR) and that the shape of a small molecule is determined by the arrangement of bonds and unshared electron pairs. Polar molecules are described, and students will practice predicting whether or not a molecule is polar. Finally, students will be introduced to the shapes of large molecules in comparison to small molecules. Chapter Outline

In this chapter, you will learn:
  • to describe the VSEPR theory
  • to identify the common shapes of small molecules
  • to explain what determines the polarity of a molecule
  • to explain why water is a polar molecule
