Chapter Overview

Over the last 20 years, AIDS has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. The AIDS Memorial Quilt, pictured in this image from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, honors only a fraction of lives lost to the AIDS virus. Many more would have died, but certain drug combinations seem to delay the worst of the disease. Now poor nations of the world are asking the United States to help them obtain those drugs for their infected citizens. In this Web activity, you will research how AIDS has affected Africa and explore options for dealing with the epidemic.
