
Arnold Adoff
(b. 1935)
Arnold Adoff was born and raised in New York City. He also worked there as a teacher for 12 years. After moving to Ohio, Adoff produced a number of poetry books and picture books. He also edited numerous collections of short stories and poems, mostly written by and about African Americans. He has been a lecturer at New York University, Connecticut College, and Queen's College and also worked as a consultant in children's literature, poetry, and creative writing.
In 1968 he was awarded a Children's Book of the Year citation by the Child Study Association of America for I Am the Darker Brother, and in 1988 he won the National Council of Teachers of English in Excellence in Poetry for Children. Since 1960, Adoff has been married to noted writer Virginia Hamilton.
