James Baldwin
(1924–1987)

James Baldwin was born and raised in New York City. Though he had lived abroad in Paris for many years, much of his work was based on his youth in New York. Go Tell It on the Mountain, a novel that brought him early fame and recognition as an influential African American writer, tells of the adolescent experiences of a boy whose life is closely linked to the church in his Harlem neighborhood.
