Stephen Vincent Benét
(1898–1943)

Stephen Vincent Benét was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His family had a strong military tradition. Both Stephen's father and his paternal grandfather, after whom he was named, were West Point graduates. To his extreme dismay, he was unable to pursue a military career because a childhood illness had weakened his eyesight. He did, however, complete his undergraduate studies at Yale. Benét married Rosemary Carr of Chicago in 1921. He is perhaps best known for his epic poem, John Brown's Body, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1929. Although he was also the author of novels and short stories, Benét thought of himself primarily as a poet.
