Elizabeth Bishop
(1911–1979)

Elizabeth Bishop was born and raised in Massachusetts, but she loved to travel and spent many years living in Brazil. In 1945, Bishop entered a poetry contest along with 800 other contestants and won. As a result, her first book, North and South (1946), was published. Bishop was always a close observer of nature. She said in an interview, "I think geography comes first in my work, and then animals. But I like people, too."
