Amanda Borden
(b. 1977)

There are few careers in which people reach retirement age by their late teens. With its unique stresses and strains, Olympic gymnastics is one such career. Amanda Borden began her second career at age 19. She went to school in Georgia and Arizona to begin preparing for life as an elementary school teacher.

Spending time out of the Olympic spotlight has required some adjustments. Borden still looks back fondly on her six years on the United States Gymnastics team. She loved the experience of being a team captain on the gold-winning 1996 Olympic team. Inevitably, after the talk show appearances and the cereal box photos, she found herself wondering "Now what am I going to do?" Now she realizes there are endless varieties of things to do when she is not spending twelve hours a week in the gym.

Borden still enjoys cheering on younger gymnasts and signing autographs. However, she is also excited about launching a new career in education.
