
Pearl S. Buck
(1892–1973)
Pearl S. Buck was born in the United States, but her parents took her to China when she was still a baby. Altogether she lived in that country for nearly 40 years and wrote about it in her stories, novels, plays and essays. One of her novels about China, The Good Earth, was made into a successful motion picture. In 1938, Buck became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature.
