Sandra Cisneros

Sandra Cisneros, whose last name means "keeper of swans," was born in Chicago, Illinois. She focuses her writing on the issues of family, real-life experiences, and the Latino culture she knows so well. She attended college in her hometown and then moved to Iowa, where she received her master's degree at the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop. There she began writing about the subjects she knew best—her life, her family, her Mexican heritage, and her feelings, including her feelings about not being or acting her age.
