Harold Courlander
(1908–1996)
Harold Courlander was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both his mother and father were of European Jewish origin. His father was a primitive painter. That helped to interest Courlander in the art of other cultures. Through his writing, he worked especially hard to bring the legends and folk tales of different peoples to the rest of the world. Courlander received a Guggenheim fellowship for work on African culture and has written versions of folk tales from many nations. His work aided in the preservation of the history and culture of civilizations all over the world, including Native American, Asian, Indian, and countless African tribes.
