Mario Cuomo
(b. 1932)

Cuomo was the first Italian American to be elected governor of New York State in 1982. He held the office for three terms, or 12 years. When Cuomo delivered the keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, Americans responded to his eloquence. Family is so important in Cuomo's life that when he needed a theme for one of his campaigns, he chose "The Family of New York."
