Walter de la Mare
(1873–1956)

Walter de la Mare was born in Kent, England, and lived much of his life in and around London. He was an accomplished poet, novelist, short story writer, critic, essayist, anthologist, and dramatist. Many of his poems are imaginative journeys into the shadowy world between the real and the unreal. His first major work was the poetry collection Songs of Childhood. De la Mare's work was not always for children, however, an imaginative childlike voice prevailed in many of his stories. In addition to his writing he was a reviewer for the Times, Westminster Gazette, Bookman, and other London journals.
