Joan Didion
(b. 1934)
Joan Didion descends from a long line of pioneers. Her great-great-grandmother came West in a covered wagon in 1846. Didion grew up in California and, as a young woman, won a writing contest sponsored by Vogue. Eventually she rose to become an editor of that well-known magazine. Her reputation in the literary world, however, is based on her novels and collections of essays such as, Play It As It Lays (1970) and A Book of Common Prayer (1977).
