Rita Dove
(b. 1952)
Rita Dove has commented that "the events of the poem should never be more important than how that event is recreated." Considering this belief, it is not surprising that her poetry can be characterized by her vivid imagery and skillful use of language. She has also said that stock questions such as "What is poetry about?" are fruitless. Poetry, she believes, leads to personal experience and should awaken readers'feelings.
Dove was born in Akron, Ohio. She graduated with highest honors from Miami University of Iowa. She has published several collections of poetry, including The Yellow House on the Corner (1980) and Museum (1983). In 1987, she received the Pulitzer Prize for her book, Thomas and Beulah. In 1993, she was nominated Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.
