Ian Frazier
(b. 1951)

Author and journalist Ian Frazier is known for his comic essays and explorations of rural America. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he lives in New Jersey and spends much of his time in Montana. His reflections of the Midwest can often be found in the pages of the New Yorker magazine, where he has been a staff writer for more than 20 years. His series of nonfiction books, including Dating Your Mom (1986), Great Plains (1989), and Family (1994), are humorous portrayals of city and country life and modern society.

When writing Great Plains, Frazier explored the United States, visiting such places as vast Wyoming ranches, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and Native American monuments in South Dakota. Although his observations in the book are humorous, he expresses sadness over the disappearance of the rural nature and lifestyles of the plains. He continues his exploration of America's heartland in Family (1994).

Frazier's book On the Rez (2000) explores the contemporary lives of Native Americans and examines their quality of life through history, personal observation, and stories of past and present Native American heroes.
