Ernesto Galarza was born in the town of Jalcocotan, an Indian village in western Mexico's Sierra Madres. When his family resettled in California, they struggled to make ends meet. Ernesto was a good student. After earning his bachelor's degree he received his master's degree from Stanford and his doctorate from Columbia. He eventually became a master teacher and writer.
