Bill Gates
(b. 1955)

Bill Gates was just 19 years old when he and his childhood friend Paul Allen started a computer software company called Microsoft. The year was 1975 and the world's first personal computer had just been introduced, yet Gates and Allen envisioned a day when computers would be a part of every person's daily life. Under Gates's leadership, Microsoft has grown to become the world's largest computer software company, employing over 50,000 people around the world. Bill Gates remains with Microsoft as its Chairman and Chief Software Architect.

In addition to his work with Microsoft, Gates has authored two best-selling books, The Road Ahead (1995) and Business @ the Speed of Thought (1999). Together with his wife, he has given more than $24 billion to a foundation that supports health and learning programs around the world.
