Steve Gietschier
(b. 1948)

Steve Gietschier is senior managing editor for research at The Sporting News in St. Louis, Missouri. He wrote The Sporting News's book reviews from 1991 through 1998. Gietschier has a bachelor's degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, as well as a master's and a doctorate in history from Ohio State University. Before joining The Sporting News in 1986, he worked for the Ohio Historical Society and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

Gietschier played sports as a boy, and he coached both of his daughters in softball and basketball on teams that won several local championships. He still attends many sporting events and remembers well the first major league baseball game he saw in person. It was a 1955 game in which legendary pitcher Sandy Koufax won his first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

In addition to his book reviews, Gietschier has written other articles for The Sporting News and for other magazines, as well. He is currently at work on a two-volume history of baseball from 1930 to the present.
