Nikki Giovanni
(b. 1943)
Nikki Giovanni spent a happy childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, where she was born. Although her poetry often voices her concern for the black community, she considers herself an individualist, who writes about love, life, and a person's fight for survival. Her poems and articles have appeared in many newspapers and magazines. Giovanni's work earned her a National Book Award nomination, as well as inclusion in the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. She says that "children are an exciting audience to both read to and write for … I hope my poetry reaches both the heart and the mind of a child who is a child and the adult who still nurtures the child within."
