Joy Harjo(b. 1951) A Native American with Muscogee Creek heritage, Joy Harjo was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her father is a Cree, and her mother is part Cherokee. Harjo studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, the University of New Mexico, and the Writer's Workshop of the University of Iowa. Her books of poetry include her first volume of poetry—a nine-poem chapbook titled The Last Song (1975), She Had Some Horses (1983), and In Mad Love and War (1990). Her poems are mostly autobiographical, drawing upon her own experiences and concerns as a Native American woman. They also highlight Harjo's love and deep appreciation of the natural world.
