William Harwood
(b. 1952)

William Harwood has covered the U.S. space program for more than fifteen years. He is a consultant for CBS News and writes for The Washington Post and Space News. Harwood is the former Cape Canaveral bureau chief for United Press International. He has covered more than 95 space shuttle flights, as well as many other space missions. Harwood maintains a Web site for CBS News entitled The Space Place. This site is a source of up-to-date information about space exploration and current and previous shuttle missions.

Harwood was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, although he considers Nashville, Tennessee his hometown because he went to school there. While in grammar school, Harwood developed an interest in space flight. His older brother was always building rockets and doing experiments in the garage. Harwood followed the space program intensely through the moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969 and beyond. He can remember standing out in the front yard when he was very young trying to spot Sputnik flying overhead. An amateur astronomer, Harwood owns an eight-inch computerized telescope that he uses frequently. He lives with his wife and children in Florida.
