Robert Hayden(1913–1980) An extremely versatile poet, Robert Hayden used a variety of poetic forms and techniques and focused on a wide range of subjects. In addition to writing about his personal experiences, Hayden wrote about current and historical events, mythology, and folklore. Born in Detroit, Hayden attended Wayne State University. He received a master's degree from the University of Michigan and taught there and at Fisk University in Tennessee. He published several collections of poetry, including Heart-Shape in the Dust (1940), The Lion and the Archer (1948), and The Night-Blooming Dereus (1972).
