Seamus Heaney(b. 1939) Seamus Heaney, born in county Derry, Northern Ireland, has devoted much of his poetry to the life, history, and conflict of his homeland. He is a gifted traditionalist whom the American poet Robert Lowell has called "the most important Irish poet since Yeats." Educated at Queen's University in Belfast, Heaney has taught at various universities in Ireland, England, and the United States. Since the publication of his first collection of poems in 1965, he has gained an increasingly large and enthusiastic audience on both sides of the Atlantic.
