O. Henry(1862–1910) O. Henry was born William Sidney Porter in Greensboro, North Carolina. Under the pen name of O. Henry, he wrote with warmth, humor, and a touch of romance about ordinary people. Before his illustrious career in writing, he was a bank teller at First National Bank in Austin, TX, where he was suspected of embezzling money. Although he had started a successful career as a writer and editor, he was indicted for embezzlement. After spending time in prison (for a crime of which he may not have been guilty), O. Henry moved to New York City, where he gathered material for his stories. He has been called one of the most popular short story writers in American literature.
