Ernesto Ruelas Inzunza
(b. 1968)
Around the age of 13, Ernesto Ruelas Inzunza and a friend found and cared for two injured American kestrels that had been shot. The birds died, but an interest in studying and protecting birds was born. Inzunza turned to books and took frequent birding and camping trips to learn about birds.
Inzunza was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Before he was 12 years old, he had attended seven different schools in four cities in Northwestern and central Mexico. He eventually settled in Xalapa, Veracruz, and attended Universidad Veracruzana, earning a B.A. in Biology. For ten years following his graduation, Inzunza conducted bird research and worked on conservation. Then, he went back to school. He got an internship at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, a refuge for raptors (birds of prey) in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Inzunza is now the executive director of Pronatura Veracruz, an organization in Veracruz, Mexico that monitors the migration of raptors in order to develop conservation programs. In 2001, Inzunza enrolled in a Ph.D. program in ecology at the University of Missouri.
