Shirley Jackson
(1919–1965)
Shirley Jackson was born in San Francisco and graduated from Syracuse University. Jackson was married and had four children. As a writer, she produced mainly two types of stories—spine-tingling tales of supernatural events and hilarious stories about family life. She once said that she wrote because "It's the only chance I get to sit down" and because it gave her an excuse not to clean her closets. Two of her more popular short stories are "The Lottery" and "One Ordinary Day With Peanuts."
