Francisco Jiménez
(b. 1943)

Francisco Jiménez was born in Mexico. He was the second child in a family that included nine children. When he was four years old, he and his older brother Roberto entered the United States with his parents, who were seeking to escape the poverty of their small Mexican village. He grew up in a family of migrant workers, traveling around the western part of the United States picking whatever crop was ripe. When he was in college, Jiménez was encouraged to write about his childhood, especially "the joys and disappointments of growing up in a migrant setting." Critics have hailed Jiménez's work for younger readers, not only for its presentation of a distinctive culture but also for its literary excellence.
