William Melvin Kelley
(b. 1937)

William Melvin Kelley was born in New York City. He was educated at Harvard University and has taught at several colleges. Kelley's stories focus on the problems of individuals— often African Americans. Kelley has said, "I am not a sociologist or a politician or a spokesman. Such people try to give answers. A writer, I think, should ask questions." Kelley is the author of the novels, A Different Drummer (1962), A Drop of Patience (1965), dem (1967), and the collection of short stories, Dancers on the Shore (1964).
