Ono Komachi
(833–857)
The early Japanese poet, Ono Komachi wrote poetry that matched the energetic intensity of her temperament. A woman of remarkable beauty, Komachi demonstrated prowess through her work and took her place among some of the most renowned poets of her day.
Her work combines the classic form of the tanka but also conveys her playfulness by using metaphors, multiple meanings, and a style that expresses her concentrated passion. Although scholars know very little biographical details about her life, many of the legends surrounding Ono Komachi now exist in the form of noh plays, a traditional Japanese theatrical form.
