
Maxine Kumin
(b. 1925)
Maxine Winokur Kumin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended Radcliffe College, where she later taught. Kumin has written novels, essays, and children's books, as well as several volumes of poetry. In 1973, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Up Country: Poems of New England. She was also named Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, 1989–1994. In addition, she is a former poetry consultant for the Library of Congress. Kumin's career as a teacher, poet, children's author, and fiction writer has spanned three decades.
