Denise Levertov
(b. 1923)

Denise Levertov has commented that she believes that the poem is the poet's means for discovering the divine in the real world. Acting upon this belief, Levertov writes original, inventive poetry that often explores the hidden meaning in ordinary events.

Levertov was born in Essex, England. She began writing poetry at an early age, and in 1946 she published her first collection, The Double Image. She married an American citizen in 1955 and her second book of poetry was published in 1957. Since then, she has written over a dozen more books of poetry, including With Eyes at the Back of Our Heads (1960) and Relearning the Alphabet (1970). She has also published two books of translations and a book of essays about writing poetry.
