
Henriqueta Lisboa
(1904–1985)
Henriqueta Lisboa was renowned as a poet who wrote for readers of all ages. Born in Lambari, Brazil, Henriqueta Lisboa published her first book of poetry in 1925. Her second book, Enternecimento, earned her the 1931 Olavo Bilac Prize from the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
In 1945, Lisboa became a professor of Hispanic American literature at the Catholic University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. In the following years, she distinguished herself not only as a poet and professor, but as an essayist and translator, as well. In 1963, she became the first woman to be elected to the Mineiro Academy of Letters.
In 1984, the Brazilian Academy of Letters honored Lisboa with the Machado de Assis Award, recognizing her for her life's work as an outstanding poet.
