Author Biographies

Barry Lopez
(b. 1945)

Although he also writes fiction, Barry Lopez is known for his nonfiction works about nature and the environment. Written in a vivid, poetic style, his works explore certain aspects of nature from a variety of perspectives, creating a well-rounded view that both informs and entertains readers.

Born in Port Chester, New York, Lopez was educated at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Oregon. In 1976, he published his first book, Desert Notes: Reflections in the Eye of a Raven, a collection of fictional narratives. Since then, he has produced several additional books and has contributed articles, essays, and short fiction to many major magazines. His most successful work, Of Wolves and Men (1978), a nonfiction work examining the relationships between wolves and men and between wolves and other animals, was praised by critics and earned Lopez a number of awards.
