Naomi Long Madgett
(b. 1923)

Naomi Long Madgett recalls, "I was motivated by my father's library and the interests and inspiration of literary parents. I discovered Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Langston Hughes at about the same time, [while] sitting on the floor of my father's study when I was about seven or eight."As a minister's daughter, Madgett was often called upon to recite poems she had memorized. During her writing career, Madgett has published seven books of poetry, and her work is included in nearly 100 anthologies. She has also taught in Detroit, where she offered the first course in African American literature in the city's public schools.
