Katherine Mansfield
(1888–1923)
Katherine Mansfield, whose real name was Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp, was born in Wellington, New Zealand. She moved to London when she was 20, and she began writing while in Germany recovering from tuberculosis. Because she continued to suffer from the disease, Mansfield spent much of her life in France and Italy, where the climate was thought to be beneficial. Many of Mansfield's stories are set in the New Zealand she had known as a child and had left behind.
