Guy de Maupassant
(1850–1893)
Guy de Maupassant was born and raised in the province of Normandy, France. After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked as a poorly paid government clerk. During this period, though, he practiced writing and became the literary apprentice of the renowned 19th-century writer, Gustave Flaubert. Maupassant is considered one of the best-known short story writers in the world. In addition to his short stories, he also published six novels, including Bel-Ami (1885) and Pierre et Jean (1888).
