Author Biographies

John McCrae
(1872–1918)

John McCrae was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He became a physician, and in World War I he served as a medical officer in France. McCrae wrote poems during and about the war and is best remembered for his poem "In Flanders Fields," which was published by the British magazine Punch in 1915. The poem was reprinted in the United States to boost the morale of soldiers and encourage others to join the service. McCrae died of pneumonia in 1918.
