Marianne Moore
(1887–1972)

Marianne Moore was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended Byrn Mawr College. As the editor of the highly-regarded literary journal, The Dial, she encouraged many new writers by publishing their work. However, she was hesitant about publishing her own work, despite the fact that it had been read and admired by many noted poets. In fact, her first book, Poems (1921), was published without her knowledge.

As part of the Modernist movement, Moore wrote poems that were unconventional in form, precise, inventive, and often witty. However, unlike most other Modernists, she chose not to write poems about such subjects as animals and other elements of nature.
