Anaïs Nin
(1903–1977)
Anaïs Nin was born in Neuilly, France. Her parents were both from aristocratic families and trained in music. Her father was a respected Spanish composer and pianist and her mother was a classically trained singer. Because of her parents' musical backgrounds, Nin was exposed to a very cultured group of people while growing up. Nin's father abandoned her mother and family when she was about ten years old. Her mother moved the family to New York City where she taught singing lessons and took in borders. At age 11, Nin began the writing that continued through her whole life. Although she wrote novels and short stories, Nin was best known for her six published diaries spanning 60 years–The Diary of Anaïs Nin published throughout the years of 1931 to 1980. She looked at life "as an adventure and a tale."
