Alfred Noyes
(1880–1958)
Alfred Noyes was both a poet and critic. He was born in Staffordshire, England, although he lived for many years in the United States and taught at Princeton University. Noyes often wrote about legendary figures from English history, such as Robin Hood and Sir Francis Drake. He wrote "The Highwayman," his best-known poem, about an outlaw and his love, while visiting Bogshot Heath. The poem may have been inspired by the fact that outlaws had once terrorized this region of England.
