Simon Ortiz
(b. 1941)
An Acoma Pueblo Indian, Simon Ortiz carries on the Native-American tradition of storytelling in his poetry. Not surprisingly, much of his poetry reflects his deep awareness of his cultural heritage. One of the poet's best-known works is "Fight Back: For the People, for the Land" (1980).
Ortiz was born in New Mexico. After graduating from the University of New Mexico, he attended the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. He has worked as a teacher, a journalist, in public relations, and as a professor at the University of New Mexico. Possessing a strong belief in the importance of education, Ortiz devotes much of his free time to educating fellow Native Americans.
