Jack Prelutsky
(b. 1940)

Jack Prelutsky was born in Brooklyn, New York, but has lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a number of years. Before he turned to writing full time, Prelutsky was a cab driver, a furniture mover, and a potter. Then, at the urging of a friend, Prelutsky submitted a collection of nonsense verses to a publisher. This resulted in his first book of children's verses, A Gopher in the Garden and Other Animal Poems (1967). He has since published many books of his own verse as well as books of verse he translated from German. Prelutsky has many talents and interests in addition to writing. One of these talents is singing, and he has appeared in summer opera companies and the musical play Fiddler on the Roof. His other hobbies include book collecting, making wooden toys, and inventing word and board games.
