Santha Rama Rau
(b. 1923)
As a young girl, Santha Rama Rau lived in an India under British rule. She was sent to England to be educated, graduated from school there in 1939, and then continued her education at Wellesley College in the United States. Before she began college, she returned to India. Her experiences during this trip were the basis for her first book, Home to India (1945), an international bestseller.
When India won its independence in 1947, Rama Rau's father was appointed as his nation's first ambassador to Japan. While accompanying her father on a trip to Tokyo, she met her future husband, an American. The couple settled in New York City. Although she has traveled all over the world, she has never forgotten her Indian roots, which color all her works.
